4S: Sustainable & Social Suppliers' Stories

Achieve zero waste by addressing surplus stock and excess goods with GOOD360

In Australia, almost $2 billion of brand-new retail goods become surplus stock every year. They lie unused in warehouses or, even worse, go to landfill.

Meanwhile, 1 in 8 people in Australia live in poverty. The Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) reports that there are currently 3.24 million Australians living below the poverty line, of these almost 50% are children and teens.

 It is unforgiveable that such inequality exists in Australia.

 Alison Covington — Founder and Managing Director of Good360 Australia — recognised this problem and made it her mission to find a solution. Good360 was launched in 2015, with the purpose of matching businesses surplus brand-new goods with people in need in Australia.

WHO ARE GOOD360?

Good360 are a not-for-profit that originated in the United States 37 years ago. To date, Good360 US have distributed over $10 billion of goods to people in need through their network of 90,000 charity members and 400+ corporate partners, America wide.

Having identified the excess goods problem in Australia, coupled with the growing number of people and communities to support, Alison was confident that Good360 was a scalable solution that could be adapted here. In 2015, Good360 Australia launched with the purpose of matching business’ surplus brand-new goods with people in need.

HOW IT WORKS

Many businesses have surplus stock due to seasonal fluctuations, poor performance of new

product lines, changes in branding or packaging or even unexpected closures due to a global pandemic! There are many reasons why stock is sitting idle on shelves with no hope of a consumer sale and businesses need a way to deal with it.

👉 Currently Good360 has over 200 businesses donating brand-new goods. Since 2015, goods valued at more than $155 million have been donated, representing 18+ million items delivered to vulnerable people. Some of these items include:

  • Apparel;
  • Toiletries;
  • Homewares;
  • Bedding;
  • Back-to-school equipment;
  • and other everyday essentials.
  • GOOD360 AUSTRALIA PLAYED AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THE 2021 NSW/QLD FLOODS AND 2020 SUMMER BUSHFIRES

During times of disaster, including recent tragedies such as the 2021 NSW/QLD floods and 2020 Black Summer bushfires, a large number of business partners have also donated ‘for purpose’ products. These are brand new goods — not surplus stock — donated to directly support people in their local community.

Good360 supports over 2,700 member charities and schools Australia-wide by offering essential brand-new goods for their communities. Members can order these goods via the Good360 website, so the right goods are going to the right people at the right time.

Every day, Good360 matches 18,000 new goods to people in need.

WHO ARE SOME OF GOOD360'S PARTNERS?

Big W has been a product donor partner with Good360 since 2017. Together they have matched over 7 million items to families in need.
